Divination, like tarot itself, invites players to explore emotional territories, complex relationships, and sometimes challenging situations and topics.
The interplay of Aspects within a shared Hero naturally explores the multiplicity of self and the different voices, drives, and perspectives that can exist within a single consciousness. This provides space for players to engage with questions of internal harmony and conflict, competing needs and values, and the complex experience of navigating life when different parts of a self pull in different directions.
Additionally, the seven Roads and Sources are drawn from tarot cards that engage directly with powerful universal themes such as death, justice, autonomy, transformation, sacrifice, balance, and transcendence.
These factors create rich storytelling opportunities, but may also intersect with players’ lived experiences in unexpected ways. It’s vital to normalize an environment of care and consent, which we see as integral to the Divination experience and not merely an add-on.
Care and consent in Divination
Safety isn’t only about avoiding harm—it’s about taking care of each other and creating the conditions for everyone to fully engage with the story. When players know their boundaries will be respected, they’re more likely to take creative risks, explore deeper emotions, and invest more fully in the narrative.
Establishing such an environment begins with a discussion about the kinds of content and themes everyone is comfortable exploring. This conversation should establish that everyone’s comfort is equally important and that the ultimate goal is maximum enjoyment at the table.
There are many creative and effective safety tools within RPG gaming, but a core principle driving all of them is a proactive and ongoing framework of consent and communication. Effective tools empower players to establish individual boundaries, and clearly and immediately alter those boundaries any time they need to.
